A City Break To Rome

Rome is such a popular tourist destination, and for good reason – it’s a gorgeous city, from its impressive monuments to its delicious food – there’s so much to see and do in Rome!

Earlier in July we spent four days strolling through the busy streets of the city and were lucky to be able to see some of the best spots in Rome. The Vatican is a must see if you are a first time visitor. Make sure to enter the beautiful St. Peter’s Basilica and climb the Dome to get a 360 degree view of the city of Rome. I’d highly suggest taking the lift part of the way unless you want to climb 551 steps all the way to the top! The Vatican Museums hold many amazing works of art, including the famous Sistine Chapel, and are definitely worth a visit.

My favourite part was seeing the Colosseum. It’s such a magnificent structure and it’s exciting to get a feel for the history behind it. One thing to note about all the sights of Rome is that you have to be prepared for long lines and crowds of tourists, especially during the summer. You can check online for options to pre-book and skip the lines and make sure to research and plan your visiting times so you don’t end up queuing for over an hour in the hot summer sun!

I would recommend walking around as much as you can, because it’s the best way to see the city and discover some hidden gems that serve great pizza and gelato. I ate too much pizza, but I definitely could have eaten more gelato! If you don’t fancy walking, there are Metro stations adjacent to most of the main sights, so you can get around using the underground. It’s fairly cheap and fast, but it’s super crowded and has limited coverage, so overall not a very pleasant experience.

If we put aside the crowds and the not-so-great underground, it was the perfect city break and I loved everything about Rome!
