Not-So-Basic Basics

I love simplicity and I believe that it’s important to incorporate classic, timeless pieces into your wardrobe. Buying into the latest trends is fine, but you need a solid foundation of good basics. I’m trying to adopt a more minimalist approach to fashion and focus on quality over quantity. I believe in investing in reliable staple pieces, because an outfit built on good wardrobe staples is going to stand the test of time and is really not that basic. Here are some of my top staples that I wear over and over again and can’t live without.

The Leather Jacket

This is probably one of my most worn pieces and one of my smartest purchases to date. You only need one great leather jacket and you can wear it with everything. I bought mine from a specialist leather shop and it’s not actually branded, so I paid a very reasonable price for it. AllSaints have some of the best leather jackets in terms of both quality and design, and I’ve got my eye on a few of their biker jackets. Alternatively, you can find a faux leather one from a high street retailer if you want a more budget-friendly option, but the quality won’t be the same.

The Silk Cami

I searched for the perfect silk cami for months and finally found this one from Jigsaw. It’s such an easy top to throw on in the summer months and works great for layering when the temperatures drop. I like to wear it under a cardigan or a leather jacket for a more casual look and under a blazer as a smarter alternative. Jersey cami tops can look really basic and cheap, but if you go for a silk one instead, it can be the perfect desk to drinks piece. Unfortunately, the Jigsaw cami is sold out, but I’ve linked a similar one below.

The Skinny Jeans

I live in skinny jeans and I love how versatile they are. It’s difficult to find the right fit, and I have to admit, I hate shopping for jeans, but when I find a good pair, they become a real staple in my wardrobe. These Frame skinnies are my favourite jeans by far. They are expensive full price, but I managed to grab them on sale and they are definitely more than just your basic denim.

The Investment Bag

I know you’ve seen the Gucci Soho Disco bag on my blog many times already, but when you spend that little bit extra on a good bag, it can really elevate a simple look and it’s totally acceptable to use it every day. I like the idea of having a few staple bags in your wardrobe, but this doesn’t mean that you need to spend a fortune on the latest “It” bag. There are some classic high-end bags at entry-level price points that never go out of style and are far from basic.

The Print Loafers

Flats and loafers are perfect to wear every day; they are comfortable and if you pick a pair in a neutral colour, they go with everything. To me, animal prints are fairly neutral and add a nice touch to a basic, casual look. They are almost as versatile as your classic black, but just a little bit more special. This pair is from Dune London and they offer a great selection of animal print shoes, so check out their website for more options.

The Statement Belt

If you are a t-shirt and jeans kind of person, you need at least one great belt in your life. A statement belt can transform even the most basic outfit. I admit that I did get caught up in the Gucci belt hype and I do not regret it. However, I didn’t go for the all-black classic belt that everyone is obsessed with, and instead, I picked up the one with navy and red which may not be to everyone’s taste, but I love that it’s a little bit different and works great with my wardrobe.

Whatever your style is, everyone needs a few key pieces that can stand the test of time. Basics can be cool, so invest in high quality materials and classic styles with a twist for a chic and timeless wardrobe.
